چکیده

During these lasts four decades, an increasing awareness has been provoked by chemicals deeply present in the environment. They can exert and cause deleterious effects on wildlife populations and human health. That is inextricably linked to the health of the environment. Elevated levels of pollutants in the watercolumn, in combination with high bioavailability of the pollutants, are likely to result in elevated concentrations in aquatic organisms. This work reports the results of selected trace elements accumulation in Black Sea species of: mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis Mediterranean mussel), three fish species namely Engraulis encrasicholus ponticus – anchovy, Sprattus sprattus phalericus – sprat and Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus – horse mackerel and marine mammals – Phocoena phocoena var. relicta Black Sea harbour porpoise. By comparison of our results with existing literature information this study aims to link biological and toxicological data to information on the sources of pollutant intake through analysis of the cetaceans' food items. The main objectives that were pursued in this study are: to determine levels of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, V) in porpoises as well as to study the distribution of essential and toxic trace elements between various body parts (tissues) of the animals (muscle, liver, kidney and brain) and to relate the trace element levels with ecological factors; to analyse selected elements accumulation in fish (food for porpoises and humans and bioindicator) and in mussels (bioindicator) from the Romanian Black Sea coast and relate element levels to biotical and abiotical factors, as well as to the set limits for human health, to evaluate the food intake and risk assessment though the fish species for humans. Another objective was to quantify the toxic species of arsenic (sum of inorganic As III – arsenite, As V arsenate, MMA monomethylarsonic acid and DMA dimethylarsinic acid) in proportion to the

Determining Total Mercury in Samples from the Persian Gulf and theCaspian Sea: Comparison of Dry Ash and Wet Extraction Mothods

Monitoring of mercury in environmental samples, with its proven toxicity on the food chain, requires sensitive and accurate analytical techniques. In this study, two methods for identification and quantification of total mercury in biological and sediment samples are compared: i) dry ash preparation and subsequent established procedures for Combustion Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, (AMA 254) ...

Concentrations of Some Trace Metals in the Tissues of Two Commercial Fishes from Tonekabon

In this study, concentrations of mercury (Hg) and 16 other elements as well as methylmercury speciation were quantified in muscle and liver of two commercial fish species. It was also our intention to evaluate potential risks to human health associated with seafood consumption. The fish species, Mullet and Kutum (Caspian White fish) fishes, were obtained from Tonekabon at the Iranian waters of ...

Assessment of Accumulation and Potential Health Risk of Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn in Fish from North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Heavy metal accumulation in aquatic organisms has been an important issue due to environmental pollution resulting from anthropogenic activities. In this study, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn in the selected fish species (Mullus barbatus, Solea solea, and Siganus rivulatus) from three consecutive bays (İskenderun, Mersin, and Antalya from North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea) were considered to provide some...

The uptake, distribution and elimination of paralytic shellfish toxins in mussels and fish exposed to toxic dinoflagellates.

We exposed green-lipped mussels Perna viridis and black sea breams Acanthopagrus schlegeli to toxic dinoflagellates Alexandrium fundyense to evaluate the accumulation, distribution, transformation, and elimination of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in a controlled environmental condition. The mussels were fed A. fundyense for 7 days followed by 3 weeks of depuration, and the fish were fed tox...
